Plant Phenomics—the unrecognized rise of a scientific discipline
PhenomUK is proud to celebrate the publication of a significant new paper from the International Plant Phenotyping Network (IPPN) Working Group, “Phenomics as a Science”, which brings together a global community of researchers to establish a shared understanding of phenomics.
Over the past two years, experts from across the plant science community have worked collaboratively to reach a consensus definition of phenomics:
“The study of the phenotypic dynamics that form plant phenotypes.”
The publication represents a truly transdisciplinary achievement, uniting world-leading expertise from plant physiology, statistics, molecular biology, ecology, computer science, plant breeding, physics, genetics, and engineering.
PhenomUK Director Professor Tony Pridmore contributed to this international effort alongside a distinguished group of scientists and researchers from around the world. Through extensive discussion, debate, and collaboration, the working group developed a framework that helps clarify the role of phenomics within modern plant science and provides a foundation for future research and innovation.
The project highlights the strength of collaborative science and the importance of bringing together diverse perspectives to address complex challenges in plant research. The resulting publication reflects not only scientific consensus but also the collective commitment of the global phenotyping community to advancing the field.
We congratulate all contributors involved in this landmark publication and are proud of PhenomUK’s role in helping shape the future direction of phenomics research.
